Chronicles of Consonance #1: On Denmark, Dissonance, and our Days.

September 2001. Australian airline, Ansett, had just gone bust. Our flights to Osaka, Japan had to be repurchased to go through South Korea.

And then it happened.

September 11, 2001 was a day no one will forget. I woke up on the morning of September 12 – living in Australia, you are always 12 to 15 hours ahead of the US time zones – to the news of the disaster. It was our Year 12 exam week.

Taking my Hamlet exam was surreal. My friends and I snuck out to watch TV updates, then sat through the exam knowing that something was rotten in the state of the world, not just Denmark.

The dissonance of knowing about the changes being wrought to the world impacted me for the years to come.

Dissonance around my identity, vocation, and life choices would haunt me. It gnawed at my thoughts and clung to my psyche.

I knew I wanted to study music. And I promised myself “I would do anything with music. But – I will never, ever, be a teacher!”

Follow this blog to read the next installment of “Chronicles of Consonance” in which I, Justin, explore how I came to write this blog: “Hybrid Consonance.”

Justin is a teacher – a music educator – and writer.

I am here to serve you. I draw on my experience as an educator, musician, and writer. If you’re hungry to achieve more, live better, and do it with a smile – you’re in the right place.
